Summer day in Varna, painting oil on canvas

Art Prints
The history of this painting started in 2009, when internet
communication with a Bulgarian artist Lchzar Radov grew into
friendship. Lchezar invited me to Bulgaria for a painting trip and
organized an exhibition in five cities in Bulgaria.

There are plenty of beautiful picturesque places in Bulgaria. We
worked for two weeks from dawn till sunset. It was a wonderful time.

The first free day occurred only after the exhibition opened in Varna.
We were walking along a boulevard in the centre of Varna when I saw
this building. It struck my imagination. The atmosphere of that day
and the light were important. The building reminded me of a cake:
festive, light and visually sweet. Everything around me was full of
joy. It was a balanced, quiet and harmonious feeling of joy rather
than an enormous excitement. I had to capture this unique moment. I
did it when I came back home to Russia.

To achieve this objective, I referred to the experience of the
Impressionists, though I did not even try to replicate their
techniques in full. If you look back too often, you can turn into a
stone.

Even an inexperienced observer will not take "Summer Day in Varna"
for an artwork of the Impressionists (of the XIX - beginning of the XX
century). I paid special attention to the correlation of light and
colour. The material form of objects, their dimensions and other
elements of their existence are created by such an ephemeral thing as
the effects of light. In other words, I painted light and achieved
effect of three-dimensional buildings, quite tangible pavement, filled
the street in with people...

At the same time, as opposed to the Impressionists, I did not apply
clear pigment brush strokes. My colours are mixed.

It was a real pleasure to work on "Summer Day in Varna". It does not
have a complicated intellectual subject which could be told as a
story. In this painting I emphasised the technique which enables to
communicate emotions and make the beholder to perceive the artwork not
through their intellect, but through their emotions. I would like the
observer to recall how the sunshine tenderly touches their skin, the
sigh of the slightly humid air for a seaside town, thesound of leaves
rustling and the rhythm of different languages.
